Yellow Dog Linux General

TOPIC: Starting 'netatalk'

This HOWTO assumes two things: a) you have netatalk installed, and b) you are going to make your home directory available over AppleShare. This means that if you are on the YDL side and, for instance, save a file from your web browser into your home directory (/home/username/), it will automatically be made availbable on the Mac OS side if you have logged into AppleShare as the same user.

If you prefer, you can add a new user and log in as that user, maintaining that home directory for AppleShare only. In essence, a transport location that does not get cluttered by other activities and files. It's entirely up to you ...
  1. login as root

  2. /etc/rc.d/init.d/atalk start

  3. switch back to MOL on the same computer or move to your Mac OS system

  4. from the Apple Menu Items, select the Chooser

  5. select the volume that correlates with your Linux side

  6. enter the appopriate user name and passwd

Your AppleShare volume should now be visible on your Mac OS desktop. You may drag-n-drop, perform Applescript using that volume, create/modify/delete directories. Any function performed on the Mac OS side shows up on the YDL side. And any function performed on the YDL side shows up on the Mac OS side.
