Introduction
Who here has memories from the early 90s of playing (or watching kids play) games on their Super Nintendo? I myself spent countless hours infront of the tv building super human eye-hand coordination on this device.
There are many emulators for many gaming platforms out there, but this document describes how to get SNES9x installed on your Yellow Dog machine, incase you have the urge to play some Super Mario or Zelda while on a plane or at work.
- Download snes9x RPM and requird nasm RPM: here and here
(The official SNES9x page can be found here)
- Install it. Log in as root and run:
rpm -ivh nasm-0.98.39-1.ppc.rpm
rpm -ivh snes9x-1.43-0.1.ydl.1.ppc.rpm - Obtain SNES game ROMs* Hint: Google, and the screenshot.
- Run snes9x:
snes9x <SomeGameRom.zip>
Left, Right, Up, Down: arrow keys
Start: Enter
A,B,X,Y,L,R seem to be in the A,Z,S,X,D,C area, just play around with them til you find the one you want ;)
Notes
* We are not endorsing downloading illegal copies of games. It is my understanding that if you own a physical copy of the game, it is OK to download the ROM. If you didn't pay for the game, downloading the ROM is piracy.
I am working on porting GSnes9x, which is a GNOME version of Snes9x, with menus and other such features.
Snes9x for Linux currently doesn't support hardware acceleration, and therefore is pretty CPU intensive if you run it full screen. Snes9x is available for other platforms as well.
If you have a gamepad (USB or serial), you should be able to use it with snes9x (rather than keyboard control). This is untested.
