In the days of SCSI, serial, and other messy interconnects, the saying used to be, "Check the cables first. It's always the cables." But we have found that with Linux in general, the saying should be revised to, "Check the system clock --it's probably the system clock." An incorrect system clock may cause a myriad of issues, including desktops not coming up clean, applications quitting, and anything that uses code revision to fail.
Installer crashes or fails
Unplug all attached devices, including 3rd party PCI cards, FireWire drives, and USB hubs and accessories before installing. These may cause the install to fail. Following successful installation, it is recommended you re-attach each device one at a time, boot, use "kudzu" to configure the new device if detected and prompted; complete the boot sequence and then halt your machine. Add the next device and repeat this procedure.
Where did the Quick Start Tutorial go?
For an unknown reason, the latest version fo FireFox as ships with YDL v6.0 provides the Quick Start Tutorial upon initial launch, but in subequent launches reverts to a blank screen. Furthermore, any attemp at manually setting the Home Page preferences to a local file fails, defaulting to a Google-Redhat page instead. If you desire to come back to the Quick Start Tutorial often, you may either visit the Configuration pages (same as the Tutorial) or point your browser to file:///usr/share/doc/HTML/index.html and then set this as a Personal Toolbar bookmark.
Why can't I watch the YouTube videos? Due to the use of a proprietary, commercial codec, we are not able to ship Gnash with support for YouTube videos. This codec may be obtained from 3rd party sources.
Sony PS3 Specific
GameOS updates 2.40 and 2.41
According to Sony's website, "An update to the PS3™ system software was released on July 8, 2008. You can use this update to upgrade your system software to version 2.41. This update corrects a problem that prevented a limited number of PS3 systems from starting properly after updating to version 2.40."
Failure to gain proper video settings at install
With the launch of YDL v6.0 for the PS3 on Tuesday, February 5, the Guide to Installation failed note the revised TAB options at the kboot prompt, resulting in non-functional install. Please force reboot your PS3 and follow the revised Guide to Installation has been posted.
Can't get your monitor or TV to work with Linux on a PS3?
- Make certain you review the PS3 HOWTOs under Audio/Video. Having read the PS3 HOWTOs, if you have a Component or HDMI cable between your PS3 and your monitor/TV and yet you are presented with a "text-based" (looks like DOS) interface, it is likely you have chosen a video setting in the GameOS that Linux does not like as the video settings in GameOS carry over to Linux.
- Return to the GameOS and try various Display settings, starting with the highest possibe and work down.
- If a setting does not work, your YDL Installer will be presented in "text-mode" (looks likes DOS). If this occurs, power-down the PS3 and return to GameOS to try again.
- Continue to try Display settings in GameOS and subsequently boot into the YDL installer until you find a setting that works for both.
- Once you have found the perfect combination, complete the installation.
Apple PowerPC Specific
Radeon 9200 with Apple Cinema Display = no go
It appears that the combination of a Radeon 9200 graphics card (found in Mac minis and G4 towers) may not be able to talk to certain Apple Cinema displays, keeping graphical and potentially text modes from working. At this point in time, there is no work-around other than to use a different monitor.
